The Teutonic Knights The Knights of the Virgin Mary, or the Teutonic Knights of the Hospital or St. Mary the Virgin was an important religious-military order, founded at the siege of Acre in 1190. As the name implies, the order was German in origin. Its knights wore a white mantle with a black cross. They took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience and were originally concerned with the care and protection of German pilgrims. In the 13th century the turned their energies from the Holy Land to the conquest of the Prussians and conquered the territory between the Vistula and the Memel. The headquarters of the Grand Master was, at various times, in Venice, Marienburg, and Konigsberg. The order received a virtual death blow in battle against Christian forces, when its Knights were destroyed by the Poles and Lithuanians at Tannenburg in 1410. The order struggled on until its remaining possessions were seized by Napoleon in 1809. In service to Lochland Vale, -Lord Milo FitzLyon |
